Welcome to
www.steam-hybrid.com
a website for the
research led by Mechanical Engineering
students at UT Austin in the field of Automotive
Waste Heat Recovery.
This research effort
hopes to deliver a heat recovery system to
substantially increase the fuel economy of existing
vehicles. This project involves creation of a
working simple exhaust waste heat recovery system
in conjunction with an internal combustion engine
in a car. Internal combustion engines today are
less than 40% efficient at converting the potential
energy of air and fuel into useful mechanical
energy. The majority of the lost energy is in
the form of dissipated heat.
